Creating a significant draw card for South Australia, Hansen Yuncken is once again collaborating with SKYCITY Adelaide Casino on a major expansion project. The relationship between these two entities was established in 1985 when Hansen Yuncken completed the first Adelaide Casino Development, transforming the historic train station into a thriving entertainment complex.
"This new expansion will deliver a world-class entertainment precinct offering new restaurants, bars, cafés, and a luxury hotel and spa. Such an iconic development will attract domestic, interstate, and international visitors to the Riverbank Precinct in the heart of Adelaide. Included as part of the development, the existing Adelaide Casino will be revitalised and restored, creating a unique experience for their customers and maintaining all heritage aspects of the building" (as quoted from the HY website).
A significant component of this expansive project involved re-establishing and refreshing the existing plaza area. Over several decades of construction and upgrades, the plaza had become a patchwork of various systems and designs. The new design required an amalgamation of all existing elements into a fully refurbished and cohesive environment.
Portolesi Structural was contracted to carry out two main elements of this work under the direction of the civil contractor, Outside Ideas. The first element was the Carbon Fibre strengthening to both the underside and top of the slab. The second element involved the preparation works for the new structural slab, which included scabbling to concrete, placement of reinforcement, installation of form void filler, placement of water stops, and concrete remediation, among other tasks.
Carbon Fibre is a sophisticated system used to rehabilitate existing structures or increase the load capacity of upgraded structural elements. This process demands a high level of skill and training, supported by robust quality systems and comprehensive technical know-how. Portolesi Structural was chosen for this critical work due to our extensive experience and proven track record with these systems. Our expertise ensured that the works were delivered on time and met the highest standards of quality and safety.
The Carbon Fibre strengthening process was essential for enhancing the structural integrity of the existing slab. This involved meticulous preparation and application to ensure that the Carbon Fibre adhered correctly and provided the necessary support. Our team employed advanced techniques and high-quality materials to achieve a durable and effective reinforcement.
In parallel, the preparation works for the new structural slab required precise execution to integrate seamlessly with the existing infrastructure. Scabbling the concrete surface was necessary to create a suitable bonding surface for the new concrete. The placement of reinforcement, installation of form void filler, and water stops were all critical steps to ensure the new slab's stability and longevity. Additionally, concrete remediation addressed any existing damage, restoring the structural elements to their optimal condition.
The successful completion of these works is a testament to Portolesi Structural's commitment to excellence in civil contracting. Our ability to deliver complex and high-quality solutions underscores our role as a trusted partner in major infrastructure projects. The revitalisation of the Adelaide Casino and its surrounding precinct not only enhances the local entertainment landscape but also preserves the heritage and historical significance of the site.
In conclusion, the collaboration between Hansen Yuncken and SKYCITY Adelaide Casino, with the contribution of Portolesi Structural, represents a landmark development in South Australia. The project will create a world-class entertainment precinct that attracts visitors from across the globe while maintaining the heritage aspects of the historic train station. Portolesi Structural's involvement highlights our expertise in advanced construction techniques and our commitment to delivering outstanding results on time and to the highest standards of quality and safety.
